When Weather Rewrote Their Elopement Plans

A Fall Elopement at Mt. Hood and Haystack Rock

Some elopement days unfold exactly as planned. And some days ask you to let go—to listen, adapt, and trust what’s coming next.

Cecelia and Andrew’s fall elopement at Mt. Hood and Haystack Rock was definitely the second kind.

They didn’t start their marriage with perfect weather or a rigid timeline. They started it by choosing each other again and again—even when the mountains said not today, and the ocean whispered wait for tomorrow.

A Quiet Love, Rooted in Movement

Cecelia and Andrew are traveling physical and occupational therapists, originally from Ohio and New Hampshire, with Vermont as their home base. Their lives are shaped by motion—new contracts, new landscapes, new seasons—and that sense of fluidity carried beautifully into how they approached their elopement.

They found me through their Vermont connection and my years living and working in the Pacific Northwest, wanting a photographer who understood both the emotional gravity of quiet moments and the unpredictable nature of PNW weather.

No guests. No distractions. Just the two of them, choosing an intentional beginning.

Finding the Right PNW Elopement Photographer

As someone who lived in the PNW but was born and raised in Vermont, I have a unique perspective on the beauty of the region.

I can see it from the perspective of someone who doesn't live there year-round, recognizing the magnitude and the beauty of the place that's experience by those who visit there for the first time.

But I also bring the knowledge and experience of someone who has lived there before and specializes in elopements in the region—and can create achievable backup plans, and lean into spontaneity when it feels right.

Getting Ready Beneath the Clouds at Mt. Hood

They got ready together at a cozy Airbnb just off Mt. Hood Highway, moving slowly and deliberately. There was no rush—only soft music, quiet conversation, and hands working together to assemble a bouquet and boutonniere from Trader Joe’s flowers, taped and shaped with care.

Then they separated to get dressed.

Cecelia stepped into a simple long-sleeve white Anthropologie dress, finishing her look with a double-layer cathedral veil and flowers in her hair. Andrew wore a green suit paired with a soft pink tie—earthy and gentle, perfectly suited to his personality and the landscape they were about to enter.

Their first look happened on the porch, surrounded by damp air and pine-scented wind. It was emotional in that quiet, steady way—no grand gestures, just deep breaths and the kind of smiles that come from knowing you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. Andrew helped Cecelia put on her locket, which included a photo of Andrew nestled inside.

Before heading out, they exchanged gifts: Darn Tough socks for each other—practical, thoughtful, and perfectly them.

When the Mountains Changed the Plan

Their original ceremony location was the Mt. Hood overlook off of Top Spur Trailhead—an easy hike with an incredible payoff. The sky was heavy but calm when we started, clouds rolling slowly through the trees.

And then everything shifted.

The clouds thickened. The wind picked up. Rain turned torrential. Thunder cracked overhead, followed by visible lightning across the sky. And then the rain came. Not just classic soft Oregon mist rain, but full on torrential downpour.

In the Pacific Northwest, you learn quickly that nature sets the rules.

We made the call to turn back—soaked and breathless—running through the rain toward the safety of the car. No disappointment. No panic. Just trust.

Back inside the car, with fogged-up windows and adrenaline still humming, we talked through a new plan. What if the ceremony didn’t happen today? What if we let the weather lead us somewhere else? What if Cecelia and Andrew returned to their Airbnb, ate a home cooked meal, slow danced to their favorite song, and tried again tomorrow?

They chose to wait—to carry their vows forward to the coast.

A New Day, Written by the Ocean

The following afternoon, we met again—this time on the Oregon Coast.

I arrived early to scout, walking the shoreline at Cannon Beach with the tide falling and the light beginning to soften. I found a stretch of beach farther south, away from the crowds, where Haystack Rock still loomed in the background but the space felt intimate and quiet.

Low tide revealed tide pools and hidden textures, and farther down the beach, I stumbled upon a cave—its back wall opening to the ocean, sunlight pouring through and illuminating mussels, shells, and starfish clinging to the stone.

It felt like a gift. Pure magic.

When Cecelia and Andrew arrived, the weather had completely transformed from yesterday. Bright sun. Clear skies. Bare feet in the sand. They walked hand in hand toward the ocean, the sound of waves replacing the thunder from the day before.

Vows at Haystack Rock

This was where they chose to become married.

They stood together, Haystack Rock behind them, and read long, private vows—the kind filled with history, depth, and honesty that can only exist in a space this quiet. They exchanged rings, shared their first kiss as a married couple, and then ran laughing toward the waves.

At one point, Andrew scooped Cecelia up and spun her around, her veil lifting into the air and catching the light as it slipped free—a completely unplanned moment that felt like joy made visible.

Later, we wandered down the beach into the hidden cave I had found earlier. As the sun filtered through the opening, the water glowed, revealing tide pools alive with color and texture. It was one of those moments where the world feels briefly unreal—hushed, luminous, and entirely theirs.

Why Mt. Hood and Haystack Rock Work So Beautifully Together

There’s a reason this pairing is so powerful.

Mt. Hood brings towering trees, dramatic skies, and the feeling of being held by the mountains. Haystack Rock offers openness, movement, and the grounding rhythm of the ocean.

Together, they tell the story of the Pacific Northwest in full — rugged, wild, and ever-changing.

Cecelia and Andrew didn’t get the ceremony they originally planned.

They got something better: a beginning shaped by trust, flexibility, and presence.

Planning Notes for Couples Considering a Fall PNW Elopement

If you’re dreaming of a fall elopement at Mt. Hood or along the Oregon Coast, here’s what this day taught us:

  • Early September sits beautifully between seasons — summer light with fall’s shifting weather
  • Mt. Hood offers accessible hikes with big visual rewards, but conditions can change quickly
  • Cannon Beach beaches are flat and walkable, though privacy often means a longer walk
  • Permits weren’t required for these locations, but always double-check current regulations
  • Most importantly: choose a photographer who has a Plan B (and C) you’ll love just as much

The weather will do what it wants. Your experience doesn’t have to suffer because of it.

A Beginning, Not a Backup Plan

This elopement felt like a fresh start — not just because of the vows spoken, but because of how they were spoken. After lives shaped by loss, transition, and change, Cecelia and Andrew chose a beginning that reflected who they are now.

Quiet. Intentional. Brave enough to let go.

If you’re planning a wedding or elopement in Vermont—or dreaming of bringing that same grounded, adventurous spirit somewhere else—I’d love to help you tell your story, wherever it unfolds.

Sometimes the most meaningful days aren’t the ones we plan.

They’re the ones that meet us where we are and gently lead us somewhere new.
